The basic rule-of-thumb is to choose an 'A-Line' dress shapes for the more 'pear-shaped' bride and a 'fishtail' style for the less curvaceous and slim-hipped.
If the bride is conscious of her waistline, a structured corset to pull in the waist is always the most flattering and will increase her confidence no end. To some extent, the type of wedding and the wedding venue itself will dictate the style of dress to choose. Bias-cut gowns are suitable for beach weddings and hotel receptions. Fairy-tale gowns with cathedral trains are usually best for traditional church weddings.
As the Bridesmaid:
Once the wedding dress is chosen, the bridesmaid dresses need to be thought about. The styles can vary from long-length gown styles to short knee-length cocktail dresses. Softer styles like full length georgette dresses with a touch of beading lend to the Grecian look and are a fashionable trand for bridesmaid dresses for this season. Colours can range from gold and coffee hues, to rich jewels, to soft pastels, again depending on the theme of the wedding. Flower girls dresses are co-ordinated to match the bridesmaid dresses.
As Mother of the Bride:
The Mother-of-the-Bride outfit needs to be elegant and understated - but it can still be fun and 'on-trend'. Again, the style and cut must suit Mum's body shape and the length should be the most flattering possible.
A hat or a fascinator can be used to enhance the look - with the outfit either totally colour-matched or with a completely contrasting colour. Depending on the theme and 'look' of the wedding either a shift dress with a jacket or a grander full-length gown could be worn.
As the Guest:
The guests at the wedding always have the widest choice of what to wear on the big day. If they discover the theme of the wedding in advance they can buy something appropriate. Styles can range from stunning two-piece ensembles with cropped jackets and shift style dresses to 50’s style 'prom' dresses with net underskirts.
As with any outfit, guests would need to make sure the cut, style and colour are the most flattering choices for their particular body shape and skin tone. Just remember not to outdo the bride!
